Memories
Fr. Mcguire singing
Fr. Mcguire, the rector, had a powerful, almost operatic, singing voice. This was especially evident in the pre Vatican II days when priests had to do a lot of the singing at a high mass. Greg Speck said that people often commented that in his case the letters SCJ stood for “the singing canary of Jersey.”
TV Time in the beginning
When I attended IHM (63-67) students were only allowed to watch the news in the evening (7-7:30) That was it. I remember that channel 5 in Schnectady had a cute weather girl. As a result most of the students were eager weather watchers. Some of us wrote fan letters to her and we received a signed photo in return. In 66 the poicy changed and we were allowed to watch two shows on Saturday evening, one was Mission Impossible and I don’t remember the other one. We could also watch football on Sunday afternoons on some occasions.
TV TIME c'mon guys, lets get things goin here
how bout, what did you watch on TV while you were at IHM…. I remember after the afternoon work, we went to the TV room and watch Merv Griffen, MASH, The Big Valley. Kevin Fay and myself were always the driving force behind all the holiday specials, especially Christmas time, and particularly Charlie Brown Christmas. I still watch it today too. what did all you other guys watch when you were there????
and who doesnt remember the tones da da da daaaaaa sound coming over the television at 9 pm to signify victory of world war two. i dont remember the channel, but they supposedly did this since the victory of the last big war.
lets add some memories here, spark things up some….
New words
The common expression often heard in my freshman year (1963) was “faked my johns.” It meant to fool someone. For example, if a pass receiver got away from a defender and made a successful catch, then the outplayed defender might say, “He faked my johns.” A spectator might describe it as a “john faking move.” It really does not seem to make much sense now, but it was heard repeatedly in daily conversation.
Fr Mike S.
He had a unique way of giving a
TAD, He would do something like this, laugh and then go
T Ah ha ha ha ah ha
A LAUGH SOME MORE
D And then said TAD
Popular words used
The word “duh or der” had to have been said more than once a week during the time i was at IHM, it was either said to me or my classmates. Fr Krah would also say this and slap himself in the face when saying it to the class.
Going into town after classes
We always had to sign out, and not be late for dinner or the other work period it if applied. I can remember those walks into town and even sometimes hitchhiking but nobody stopped that i can remember, if they did we were already where were headed. I would go into town to one of the stores and get snick snacks as well as buy lottery tickets, well lets just say nobody knew i was buying the lottery tickets accepts, Mike Trudel Joe Micci and Jose Flores, some of my best pals, WHERE ARE YOU GUYS?
Fun on saturday nights
It ranged from going bowling, to going into town shopping, also we would sometimes go to Friendlys Ice cream parlor for a JIM DANDY one of my favorites and Fr Mike S. enjoyed it very much too.
The class of 77 would remember this
We had some type of thing going i cant recall all the details but we were able to have one of the seniors as a slave for a day and had to pay so much money, it was interesting and fun, but it had its moments too.
Talking in the dorm after lights out
The freshman & souphmore class should remember during 1977 and 1978, if we were talking after lights out depending on who was on durty a number of things took place. It was like either heading to the gymnasium in our PJS and were doing exercises till 11pm or till we were tired enough to shutup and go to bed that was with Fr Mike. If it was Fr Richard Burchell it was the end of the hockey stick across our butts or a TAD we really had a choice it depends who was on durty.
